Support at hand for seafarers’ mental health and wellbeing

19 Oct 2018

ISWAN (International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network) has extended its support for seafarers concerned about their mental health and wellbeing with the publication of a support guide in a range of languages.

The self-help guide Psychological Wellbeing at Sea, originally published in English, has now been translated into five additional languages – Chinese, Filipino, Hindi, Russian and Spanish – with an Arabic version on the way. ISWAN explains that the guide, written by a consultant clinical psychologist, “provides seafarers with straightforward, practical tips on how to enhance their wellbeing, despite the many challenges of life at sea”.

The guide can be downloaded at: https://seafarerhelp.org/assets/downloads/Psychological-Wellbeing-at-Sea.pdf

In further support for seafarers’ wellbeing, ISWAN has also launched a new training package, in association with KVH Videotel, on “Seafarers’ Mental Health and Wellbeing”, which will be available free of charge throughout the industry. The training focuses on what seafarers can do to cope with the challenges of working at sea, and underlines the importance of rest, diet, team activities and maintaining good relationships, as well as support available through ISWAN’s 24-hour multilingual helpline, SeafarerHelp, and port-based organisations such as Mission to Seafarers.
