Civilian workers for the British Royal Navy are taking industrial action over their pay. Nearly 700 workers at the Royal Navy’s Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA), which supports the navy’s global logistical operations, are taking the action following a “derisory” 1.5 percent pay rise. The workers, who are members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), are working only their contracted hours, and are not preparing food for social functions. The union, which has launched a “Fair Pay for RFA” campaign, has accused the British government of forcing the employer to impose a low pay increase, “undermining the living standards of a crucial group of workers who have seen service in major trouble spots”.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: "From the Falklands to the Gulf, the RFA is the navy lifeline and those working within it deserve far better than this kick in the teeth … The government should lift the pay cap and allow us to negotiate a fair settlement with the employer.”
