Armed robbery and piracy continue to be hazards that seafarers face in many parts of the world. The latest incidents reported to the International Maritime Bureau’s (IMB) Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC) include the following.
- Nine pirates in a speedboat chased and fired on a tanker around 30 nautical miles off Bonny, Nigeria on 6 November. The alarm was raised, all crew mustered in the citadel, and security procedures were activated. After the vessel increased speed and took evasive manoeuvres, the pirates abandoned their attack.
- Five robbers armed with knives boarded a bulk carrier around 11 nautical miles off Pulau Merapas, Indonesia on 4 November. They threatened the master, stole his personal belongings and ship’s money, and escaped.
- Two robbers armed with knives were spotted on board a tanker anchored at Tabangao, Batangas, Philippines on 20 October. The alarm was raised and the crew mustered. The robbers escaped with ship's property.
- Three robbers were spotted on board a containership during anchoring at Chittagong, Bangladesh on 16 August. The alarm was raised and the crew mustered. The robbers threatened the second officer with a knife and, seeing the remaining crew approach, escaped with stolen ship’s stores.
