African transport workers unite to build power

05 Mar 2018

As part of the ITF's 9th Africa Regional Conference, 7-9 March, the participants will elect workers' representatives to the Africa regional committee, prepare for the ITF’s 44th Congress in Singapore in October and host conferences for young workers and women workers on 6 March.

The National Union of Road Transport Workers, Nigeria, is hosting the events. The union's president, Najeem Usman Yasin, said: "This is an important time for the Africa region; economies are growing fast and it is transport workers who are enabling this rapid expansion. This gives workers a unique opportunity to organise and build power, and I expect this meeting to look forward to how we can unite and do this."

Anna Karume, ITF Africa deputy regional secretary, commented that the transport workers of Africa can make their voices heard this week and influence the work of the ITF Congress, which is only seven months away.

Since July 2016, every ITF transport section and region, as well the women transport workers and young transport workers’ departments, have held conferences to prepare for October's congress, with over 2000 workers and activists taking part.
