People-smuggling across English Channel

23 Nov 2018

A gang of Iranian people-smugglers is believed to be behind a recent increase in the number of migrants and refugees making the crossing from France across the English Channel in unregulated boats to reach the English coast.

After more than 60 people were rescued off the Kent coast or discovered on the shore within just a few days, a further nine suspected migrants called the British police to say there were in trouble while trying to clamber up rocks after apparently crossing the Channel in a small inflatable boat. A dinghy carrying seven suspected migrants was also found on a beach near Dover.

Local MP Damian Green blamed the gangs behind the crossings: "People clinging to rocks in Folkestone are desperate, and they are vulnerable to international criminal gangs who will tell them anything to take their money off them."
