A court in Wilmington, Delaware has charged two Greek shipping companies and a chief engineer with the deliberate cover-up of pollution from the Nigeria-flagged oil tanker Evridiki. Evridiki Navigation, Liquimar Tankers Management Services and Nikolaos Vastardis were charged with failing to keep accurate pollution control records, falsifying records and obstruction of justice.
An inspection by the US Coast Guard in March found that the chief engineer had failed to maintain an accurate oil record book that fully recorded the discharge overboard of bilge water and any failure of the ship’s oil filtering equipment. He also allegedly made false statements to the Coast Guard about the operation of the equipment. All three defendants are charged with failing to maintain an accurate oil record book, falsification of records, obstruction of justice and making false statements.
