Somalia is set to become a part of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) community. This is a remarkable achievement given the years of lawlessness and lack of governance in the country, where criminal activity, particularly the rise of piracy, was rife.
The country plans to have a fully operational Department of Maritime Administration by the end of 2018, which will enable it to carry out its flag, port and coastal responsibilities in line with IMO instruments.
The IMO will work with Somalia to enact a shipping code and accede to all key IMO treaties that it refers to. The IMO has also called on the government of Somalia to sign up to the Indian Ocean memorandum of understanding on port state control.
