Join an ITF union

The best way to ensure that your rights at work are protected is to join a union.

Union members generally have higher wages than workers who are not members of a union. Union members also tend to have better working conditions, shorter working hours and better health and safety. Union members are better protected against unfair treatment at work.

The ITF has over 650 member unions, nearly 200 of which represent seafarers. Our seafarers’ unions are spread across almost 100 countries worldwide, bringing together over 650,000 seafarers, both officers and ratings

What if there is no ITF union in my country?

There are some countries where there are no ITF affiliated trade unions for seafarers, such as China.

In other countries where trade unions are illegal there are no trade unions at all, such as the United Arab Emirates.

If there is no ITF affiliated union in your country, you can apply to become a member of the ITF directly. Please contact us.

If you are working on a ship that is covered by an ITF Collective Agreement, then you will automatically become a member of the ITF union that holds the agreement for the duration of the agreement.
